Does Your School Need Books?

Thank you for your interest in ACCESS BOOKS, a non-profit dedicated to providing pleasure reading books to school and classroom libraries. Your students will gain exposure to the love and rewards of reading. The books you will receive will be in excellent condition, current and mostly fiction and popular books. Some of the books you can expect to receive are the current Goosebumps series, Dr. Seuss, Harry Potter and the classics such as Charlotte’s Web. You will receive brand new hardcover books for your school library in addition to gently used paperbacks for classroom library sets. We partner you with another school that is interested in assisting your students discover and/or nurture their love of reading.

Along with volunteers from your school community, we will paint and refurbish your library. We paint murals and slogans as well as provide you a reading rug and some comfortable furniture. Painting takes place on a Saturday. You can see samples of the murals painted in the past in our photo gallery or your may have ideas for your own. We complete the painting in one day. All the items used to paint the library are donated. Therefore, we do not know the exact colors we will have.

Your responsibilities include:

A wish list of books or library related items that your school would like to receive is necessary as soon as possible. An example may be 30 copies of a popular book, a rocking chair or a magazine subscription. We cannot guarantee the delivery of everything on your wish list, but we try our best to accommodate.

When we paint the library, it is very important that members of your community assist in the endeavor. This is a partnering event and we want your community to be involved in the event.

It is very important that books be available to the students as soon as possible. In addition to painting murals, we will spend the day processing books for library circulation and classroom use. Since we rely on volunteers, we ask that you also help in providing assistance for the day.

Most importantly, in some of the books your students receive, there will be notes included. These notes say, “I like this book because…” (students fill this in). We request that students from your school provide a like note concerning a book he/she reads. We provide sample notes for you to run off. We request these notes be completed no later than three weeks after receiving the books. The note writing develops a commonality among the students at both schools. These notes are posted at the partner school where students read them. WE DO NOT WANT THANK YOU NOTES. The notes are for reader participation and the building of common experiences through pleasure reading. We do not want your school to view these books as a gift. We believe it is the right for all children to have quality pleasure reading books to enjoy.

If you are interested in participating in our program, please complete the form below or download and complete our request form and fax it to 310-203-0033. Do not include a cover sheet.
