Author Visits
While refurbishing school libraries is the foundation of our mission, we also seek to foster a culture of literacy and build communities of readers at the schools we serve. To this end, we frequently sponsor author and illustrator visits at schools that have previously received an Access Books library refurbishment.
Not only are the author's books permanently in the school library, but every student who attends the event receives their very own copy of a book by that author. Students have an opportunity to meet the visiting author and have their book signed.
The impact of these events is far-reaching. Students make a connection between the new books in their school library and their real-life authors. Reading, writing, and authorship are demystified. At our events, authors share their inspirations and their personal journeys as writers with interactive, multimedia presentations. They are fun, approachable, and engaging. .
“When students see an author that looks like them or has similar experiences and that author tells them they can be a writer, that really means something," said Takisha Spears, principal at McKinley Elementary School in Compton. "The authors have no idea the impact they have."
We regularly schedule authors to visit schools across Los Angeles County. Please see our upcoming events to find out who's up next!
