Books Make Good Company Corporate Campaign
Last year we launched our pilot campaign, “Books Make Good Company,” where we invited companies to partner with Access Books to improve literacy for children living in poverty in Los Angeles and it was quite successful.
Access Books has been transforming neglected, outdated school libraries by removing old, tattered, irrelevant books and replacing them with brand new, high interest, culturally relevant books. Since 1999 we have donated over 2.4 million books in over 400 schools.
Childhood literacy impacts entire communities. When children have access to plenty of books to read, they’ll naturally become better readers. When they read well, they’ll naturally do better in school. When they do well in school they will grow up and have better opportunities like college and higher paying jobs.
Obstacles make it hard for children in low-income neighborhoods having plenty of books to read. Poverty is number one. The children we serve have little to no books of their own and the public library is too dangerous to walk to alone. Access to books must come from schools but there is no funding to keep school libraries up to date and well stocked. Schools in affluent areas have fundraising groups and grant writers to buy new books plus children have plenty of books at home but the schools we serve don’t have such resources. Access Books alleviates financial hardships by finding the funding for new books and donating them directly to schools. Most of what we raise goes directly to schools and students. Overhead is low as all of our employees are part time, we don’t have a facility to maintain (our warehouse is donated), and we have a very large, enthusiastic, and reliable team of volunteers.
In addition to refurbishing libraries, we offer schools support programs to keep students engaged and excited about reading. Our author visits introduce children to authors, our after school book clubs give children who stay on school yards while their parents work something constructive to do with their time, our family literacy workshops teach caregivers how to support their child’s reading at home, and our book bundles program give children the opportunity to build their own home libraries.
Since our “Books Make Great Company” corporate fundraising campaign went so well last year we’re going to make this an annual campaign and are inviting corporations to join us. Below are the giving levels.
Depending on your company’s level of support, Access Books will recognize you in press releases, school site signage, our online newsletter, website, and social media. We always take lots of pictures and video that you are welcome to use for company purposes.
If you have any questions please call our executive director, Dr. Rebecca Constantino at 310-920-1694 or email her at [email protected].
