We're Returning to Puerto Rico!
Access Books is returning to Puerto Rico in the new year! We're seeking financial support and volunteers to refurbish two school libraries on April 3rd and 4th, 2020. Volunteers will be responsible for their own accommodations and transportation to and from Puerto Rico. Access Books would appreciate a donation of $200 per volunteer to participate.
The Schools We're Serving
Escuela Francisco Hernandez y Gaetan is a public school located in inner-city Santurce, serving a low-income population with a median household income of $21,500. It has 300 students in grades K-5. It was a receptor school following the school closures in the area shortly after Hurricane Maria. It has no green spaces; however, they make the best of their situation with a small makeshift garden. Currently, the school has no library, but with the assistance of Access Books, a classroom will be converted into a library. Escuela Jose Robles Otero is a public school located in Toa Baja, PR. The town of Toa Baja was founded in 1745 and is located in the north coast of Puerto Rico. It is a K-5 school with about 200 students where 98% live below the poverty line. The median household income is approximately $14,400. During Hurricane Maria, the school served as a shelter for those impacted by the severe flooding in the area. The school has a library and a librarian, but very few books.
